Gifts to the Department of Cinema and Television Arts Fund allow the department to stay ahead of ever evolving trends in entertainment through the purchase of new equipment, the attraction and retention of specialized faculty in their disciples, and grants to study relevant topics like diversity in Hollywood. Funding also allows more students like Dilek to participate at global conferences and film festivals, garnering awards, recognition and attention for creative storytelling.

‘Amal’ is the story of an American volunteer doctor, Mary, who witnesses a tragic event that leaves a young Syrian girl named Amal without a family. Mary adopts her, but problems arise in the process when a travel ban is placed on Syrians traveling to the United States.

A touching, emotional, and timely story, this Senior Film Project was on the official shortlist for the 2019 British Academy (BAFTA) Student Film Awards, the British equivalent to the Student Academy Awards. Directed by recent Cinema and Television Arts alum, Dilek Ince, ‘Amal’ also received a Directors Guild of America Student Film Awards in the Outstanding Student Women Filmmakers category.

Dilek is just one example of the imaginative storytellers produced by CSUN’s Department of Cinema and Television Arts (CTVA) who invoke emotion and spark dialogue among its audiences.

Named one of the 40 Best Film Schools in the world by Variety, CTVA boasts seven programs of study including electronic media management, film production, media theory and criticism, multimedia production, screenwriting and television production, and a Master of Fine Arts in screenwriting program. But the secret ingredient to the department is its faculty, many of whom are working professionals, bringing both academic thought leadership as well as a practical understanding of the business.
